The State of SEO in 2026: 35 Key Statistics

A first-page ranking used to be a satisfying end point. In 2026, it is better understood as an entry ticket. 

A brand can rank, appear beneath an AI-generated answer, earn an impression, and receive no visit. Another can attract fewer clicks but win the ones that matter: a buyer comparing products, an operator looking for a solution, or a customer ready to visit a nearby business. The search opportunity remains vast, yet the route from query to website has become less direct. 

These 35 statistics explain that shift. They cover demand, click behavior, AI summaries, keywords, links, site health and local intent. 

The search opportunity is still enormous 

With the rise of AI assistants, the discovery landscape has become broader but traditional discovery channels like Google hold their relevancy.

1. Google handled more than 5 trillion searches annually, according to Google in May 2025. That is more than 13.6 billion searches on an average day although real daily demand fluctuates.

2. Google held 91.27% of the worldwide search engine market in June 2026. Bing followed at 4.68%, with every other measured engine below 1.3%.

3. 15% of daily Google searches are new, a figure Google has repeatedly reported. Search demand cannot be reduced to a fixed keyword list; people constantly invent new ways to express familiar needs.

4. AI Overviews increased usage by more than 10% for the query types that triggered them in large markets, including the U.S. and India, according to Google. This is a platform-reported usage claim, not an independent traffic study, but it suggests AI answers can expand query volume even while changing downstream clicks.

What to do with this data 

Do not build a search strategy around the idea that demand is moving neatly from Google to one replacement. Buyers can move between conventional results, AI answers, video, social discussions, maps, and brand websites in one research session. The practical job is to make the brand recognizable and credible across that journey. 

Rankings and clicks are increasingly different metrics 

Position still influences traffic. It just does not control the entire results page. 

5. The #1 in Google’s organic search result earned a 27.6% average click-through rate in an analysis of roughly four million results.

6. The top three organic results captured 54.4% of organic clicks in that study. “Page one” hides a steep distribution: the top few positions are a different performance tier from the bottom half. 

7. Only 0.63% of searchers clicked a result on page two. A page ranking eleventh may be close to page one in a reporting tool and still be far from meaningful visibility. 

8. Moving up one position increased relative CTR by 32.3% on average but the payoff varied widely by starting position. 

9. Moving from position two to position one produced 74.5% more clicks. The commercial value of SEO improvements is therefore concentrated near the top. 

10. URLs using words similar to the query had a 45% higher CTR than the URLs without the keyword. A readable URL can reinforce relevance before the visit. 

These figures come from one large study rather than a universal CTR curve. Branded queries, ads, featured snippets, local packs, shopping units, device type, and AI summaries can all change the result. 

The decision behind the metric 

Track rankings to diagnose movement, not to declare victory. Pair them with query-level impressions, page-level CTR, qualified visits, and conversion value. Improving a term from position eight to six may look good on a chart; improving a buying-intent term from position two to one may change the pipeline. 

AI summaries are changing search behavior 

Pew Research Center’s March 2025 browsing study offers one of the clearest independent views of what people do after encountering a Google AI summary. The sample included 900 U.S. adults and 68,879 unique Google searches. Search results were collected separately in April 2025 so the study is a strong behavioral snapshot rather than a permanent global benchmark. 

11. 18% of the Google searches in Pew’s dataset produced an AI summary.

12. 58% of participants encountered at least one AI summary during March 2025. AI-generated search results were already a mainstream experience within the sample. 

13. Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared. Without a summary, they clicked a conventional result on 15% of visits. 

14. A cited source inside the AI summary received a click in only 1% of visits. A citation may create exposure or trust, but it should not be valued as though it were a conventional top ranking. 

15. Users ended their browsing session after 26% of pages with an AI summary, compared with 16% of pages without one. 

16. About two-thirds of searches ended without a result click, regardless of whether an AI summary appeared. People often continued within Google, navigated elsewhere or stopped browsing. 

17. Research by Pew Research Center shows that 60% of searches with words like “who,” “what,” “when,” and “why” resulted in an AI summary.

18. AI overview visibility raises CTR from 0.6% to 1.08%. 

19. Long queries were far more likely to trigger AI summaries. They appeared for 53% of the searches containing at least 10 words versus 8% of searches with one or two words. 

20. Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit collectively accounted for 15% of cited AI-summary sources. Government domains also appeared more often in AI summaries than in standard results: 6% versus 2%.

Why this changes content strategy 

Short informational answers are easy to summarize. A page earns the click when it offers something the results  page cannot fully absorb: original data, a usable tool, a detailed comparison, firsthand evidence, a consequential point of view, or the next step in a buying decision. 

Citation visibility also deserves its own measurement. A brand can influence a high-intent conversation without receiving the final click, but visibility is not the same as business impact. Monitor citations and mentions alongside branded search lift, qualified traffic, assisted conversions, leads, and revenue.

The keyword universe is overwhelmingly long-tail 

Large headline keywords attract attention because their volume is easy to communicate. They are not representative of search demand. 

21. 94.74% of keywords receive 10 or fewer monthly searches, according to Ahrefs.

22. Only 0.0008% of keywords receive more than 100,000 monthly searches. Huge-volume terms are statistical outliers. 

23. Google Ads Keyword Planner overestimated volume 54.28% of the time in an Ahrefs study and was roughly accurate 45.22% of the time. 

24. 46.08% of clicks in Google Search Console went to hidden queries in an Ahrefs analysis. Even first-party reporting does not reveal the full demand picture.

25. The average top-ranking page also ranked in the top 10 for nearly 1,000 related keywords in an earlier Ahrefs study. One strong page can satisfy a topic rather than a single exact phrase.

The takeaway is not to publish a page for every long-tail variation. It is to understand the underlying job behind those variations and create one resource with enough depth to answer it well. 

Content visibility is scarce, not automatic 

26. 96.55% of pages received no organic traffic from Google in Ahrefs’ study of approximately 14 billion pages.  

27. Only 1.94% of pages received between one and 10 monthly organic visits. Publishing is an input, not a distribution strategy. 

28. Only 5.7% of newly published pages reached Google’s top 10 within one year in Ahrefs’ study of two million pages. 

29. Pages that did reach the top 10 typically did so within two to six months. This timing applies to the successful minority, not to every page. 

The failure mode here is volume without a route to discovery: thin articles aimed at interchangeable keywords, no internal authority, no external references, and no reason for a reader or another publisher to remember the source. 

Links and authority still compound 

30. Top-ranking pages acquired new followed referring domains at an estimated pace of 5% to 14.5% per month in an Ahrefs analysis.

31. 73.6% of domains had at least some reciprocal links. Reciprocal linking is common on the open web; manipulative exchange schemes are a different behavior. 

32. 66.5% of links observed across a nine-year period were dead. Link decay makes redirects, reclamation, and content maintenance recurring work.

Links are not a substitute for value. They are evidence that other sites found a page worth referencing. Original studies, definitive resources, tools, and clear expert explanations have a more natural reason to earn them than undifferentiated summaries. 

Technical SEO remains unfinished work 

33. Only 33% of websites passed Core Web Vitals thresholds in Ahrefs’ 2026 statistics collection. 

34. More than 67% of domains using hreflang had issues. International targeting is particularly vulnerable to configuration errors. 

35. 72.3% of websites contained slow pages. A sitewide score can conceal weak templates and important landing pages. 

Google defines good Core Web Vitals as Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint below 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1. Google also cautions that good scores alone do not guarantee top rankings; relevance and overall page experience still matter. 

Fix in order of consequence 

Prioritize failures that prevent discovery or degrade valuable journeys: accidental noindex rules, broken canonicals, crawl blocks, rendering failures, redirect loops, and slow commercial templates. A missing H1 on an obscure page is rarely as urgent as a product category that cannot be indexed. 

Local search converts proximity into action 

Google’s widely cited local-search research found that 76% of people who searched on a smartphone for something nearby, visited a related business within a day, and 28% of nearby searches resulted in a purchase. 

For a local brand, completeness and consistency are not administrative details. Hours, categories, location pages, reviews, photos, and accurate profiles remove friction from a high-intent journey. 

What marketers should measure now 

The modern search scorecard needs three layers. 

1. Business outcomes 

  • Qualified leads and sales influenced by organic discovery 
  • Conversion rate and value by landing page and intent group 
  • Assisted conversions from longer research journeys 

2. Demand capture 

  • Non-branded clicks and impressions for commercially relevant topics 
  • Page-level CTR, segmented by query type and device 
  • Share of visibility across conventional results and useful search features 

3. Brand discoverability 

  • Branded search demand 
  • Relevant citations and mentions in AI answers 
  • Presence in credible social discussions and third-party sources 
  • Referral quality from discovery surfaces, not just referral volume 

This is where SEO, answer engine optimization, and generative engine optimization converge. Google’s current guidance says conventional SEO practices remain relevant to generative search, that no special AI schema is required, and that rewriting pages purely for AI systems is unnecessary. The most useful SEO statistic is not the largest number in this article. It is the gap between visibility and action. 

Google processes trillions of searches, yet many result pages send no clicks to the open web. Top rankings still command attention, but AI summaries and rich result formats can absorb the simple answer. The response is not to abandon SEO. It is to create stronger reasons to be found, cited, remembered, and chosen.
