From zero to named in 13 of 14 Perplexity answers, and how to keep it

An AI leasing and resident-communication platform went from 0 of 1,089 AI answers to being named in 13 of 14 Perplexity answers to its core customer-support question within two months, every time with a citation to its own page. When that one page dropped out of Perplexity's sources, the mentions went with it. The lesson: build more than one route in.

Perplexity answers naming it on its core question
41 of 41
Mentions that came with a citation to its own site
70%
Of citations in its category go to vendor pages

The challenge

The vendor's AI visibility rested on a single cited page on a single engine. ChatGPT and Gemini never named it, and when Perplexity rotated the page out in September, mentions fell back.

What we found

No engine named the vendor from May 19 to Jul 12, 2026 (0 of 1,089 answers). Perplexity first named it on Jul 13 for its core customer-support question.
By Aug 10 to 23, Perplexity named it in 13 of 14 answers to that question, every time citing its own page.
In this category 70% of citations go to vendor pages and 13.5% to blogs and listicles, so third-party comparison listings are the cheapest extra routes in.

The play

  1. 1Get listed on several third-party comparison pages so no single page carries every mention.
  2. 2Publish vendor pages for each buyer question, not one catch-all page.
  3. 3Build separate sources for ChatGPT and Gemini, which read differently from Perplexity.
  4. 4Watch weekly: the fall was visible on Perplexity early enough to act on.

How we measured

A vendor of AI leasing and resident-communication software for real estate operators, tracked on the AirPulse platform. Five category prompts about AI chatbots, leasing software and lead automation ran once a day; Gemini was added on 2026-06-15 and the prompts did not change.

5 tracked buyer questions, 132 daily runs, May 19, 2026 to Sep 28, 2026, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. Published without the brand's name.

  • When Perplexity stopped citing that page, mentions fell to 3 of 70 Perplexity answers (4.3%) in Sep 15 to 28. ChatGPT and Gemini never named it (0 of 1,289).
  • Tracked on the platform only; no AirPulse engagement work is documented for this brand.
  • Gemini was added on 2026-06-15, so comparisons across the full window use Perplexity alone.
  • A Google AI Overview scraper outage from 2026-09-12 to 2026-09-28 cut Google AI citations; the headline uses Perplexity only.
  • Prompts ran with a global region. Source categories are assigned by domain, and any software vendor's site counts as a competitor's site. Naming is measured by text match on the answer.
