What Search Console now shows
Since 31 August 2026, Search Console reports impressions from Google's generative AI features for every property worldwide. The data covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover, and it can be broken down by page, country and date. Google's help page is explicit about the limit: it reports impressions only. There is no click count for these features.
Two things follow. First, you now have a Google-authored list of which of your pages appear inside AI answers, which no scraping tool could give you reliably. Second, an impression is not a visit and not a recommendation; it means a page of yours was among the sources shown. Whether your brand was named in the overview text is a separate question, and Search Console does not answer it.
Step 1: pull the page list
- In Search Console, open the Performance report and filter to the generative AI search appearance.
- Switch to the Pages dimension. Export the list with impressions for the last 28 days.
- Sort by impressions. The top of that list is the set of pages Google already trusts inside AI answers. That is your refresh queue, in priority order.
Step 2: cross it with the ChatGPT prompt set
Take the eight to sixteen buying prompts you already run in ChatGPT (the method is on how to measure whether ChatGPT mentions your brand). For each, run it in Google with AI Overviews on, and record two things: whether your brand is named in the overview, and which of your URLs, if any, is shown as a source. Now join that against the Search Console page list.
| Page appears in Search Console AI impressions? | Named in the overview on the buying prompt? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | Protect it. Do not restructure. Add one first-party number if it has none. |
| Yes | No | The page is shown as a source without the brand being said. Fix the first paragraph so it states who answers the job. |
| No | Yes | Named from memory or a third-party page. Fragile. Find the page Google is showing and get a page of yours in beside it. |
| No | No | Not in the answer. Write the job page. See how to get the work cited. |
Step 3: harden the pages Google already shows
The pages with impressions are the ones to improve first, because Google has already decided they are relevant to AI answers. Hardening means making the answer easier to extract and harder to dispute.
- Put the answer in the first paragraph after the H1, in plain text.
- Add one first-party number with its date: a measurement you made, on a named prompt set, on a named day. "On 1 September, named on 4 of 12 buying prompts" is a fact an overview can quote. "Updated for 2026" is not.
- Add one table or numbered list that contains the answer on its own.
- Check the page is not JavaScript-only for its main content, returns 200, and is self-canonical.
- Leave the URL and the H1's job alone. You are strengthening what Google already shows, not replacing it.
What this does not tell you
Search Console covers Google only. A page with strong AI Overview impressions can be absent from every ChatGPT answer on the same topic, because the two engines retrieve from different indexes. Keep the ChatGPT and Perplexity columns in your prompt table; the Search Console list is a fourth column, not a replacement.
